Sumatera island is large with one of the biggest island in the world. The continuous mountain of Bukit Barisan, which extends from Aceh at the tip of the island of Sumatera to Lampung at the bottom of the island, guards the province on the west side, providing home for thick, tropical jungles and lush vegetations. The western mountains towards the beaches of the east, mountain streams, strong rivers, with gorgeous waterfalls.
Wildlife The Flora and Fauna in Sumatera is similar to the Asian mainland, but Sumatera has still vast rainforest and much wildlife. There are vast areas of untouched lowland rainforest and sub-mountainuous and maountain forests. Alpine vegetation occurs at the higher altitudes.
There are still time to both see and save it. The island of Sumatera can brag with several hundreds of mammals, almost 200 reptiles, over 60 amphibians, almost 300 fish species, and more than 450 bird species. Of these are 9 mammals, 30 fish species and 19 bird species endemic. The huge national park of Leuser is shared with Aceh and there are several smaller parks. The orangutan, the Sumateran tiger, and the Sumateran rhinoceros are famous inhabitants of North Sumatera. Other friends are for example the elephant, many species of monkeys, the tapir, the honey bear and several kinds of deer. Sumatera has also 10 species of the hornbill
About 400-500 wild Sumateran tigers (Phantera tigris sumatrae) are believed to survive in Sumatera, primarily in the island's five national parks. the Sumateran tiger is the smallest tiger sub species. Males are in an average 2.4 meters from head to tail and weigh about 120 kilograms. Females are somewhat smaller. Wild Sumateran tigers have been isolated from its relatives in the Asian mainland for about 12,000 years and has probably the most different set of genes compared to other tiger species.
The Sumateran rhino ( Diceroshinus sumatrensis ) is probably the most endangered of all rhinoceros species. It prefers tropical rainforest and mountain moss forest. It is the only two-horned rhino in the Asian region. Numbers have declined due to poaching and very few left. it weights about 600 - 800 kg and is 0.9 - 1.5 m tall at the shoulders. It feeds on fruits, leaves, twigs and bark. The main habitats is in Leuser National Park .
The most well known flower is the Rafflesia arnoldi, teh biggest flower in the world. It is found only in certain part of Sumatera. This plant is parastic and grows on certain lianas but does not produce leaves. It can measure up to 1 meter in diameter and have 2 cm thick petals weighing up to 18 kg. The smell is awful. The Orangutan is easy to see in the wild.

After lunch in drive to Brastagi, on the way visit Rumah Bolon (Long House) the old palace of Batak Simalungun Kings and Sipiso-piso water fall, arrival at Brastagi visiting fruit market at Batak Karo traditional village at Peceren, late afternoon check in to hotel.
Day 3 : Brastagi – Airport Medan
After breakfast drive to Medan via Sibolangit and Sembahe, arrival at Medan directly transfer to Airport for your flight to next destination.

Day 2 : Brastagi – Parapat / Samosir
After breakfast drive to Parapat via Simarjarunjung, on the way stop at Sipiso-piso waterfall and visit Rumah Bolon (Long House) the Palace of Batak Simalungun Kings. Arrival at Parapat crossing to Samosir Island by ferry boat and check in to Hotel.
Day 3 : Samosir Excursion
After breakfast excursion by ferry boat on Lake Toba and visiting several Batak Toba villages : Tomok (the old tomb of Sidabutar Kings), Ambarita (stone chairs and table the execution place of Sialagan Kings), Simanindo (Batak Toba traditional dance and museum). Afternoon return to hotel.
Day 4 : Samosir - Sipirok
After breakfast crossing back to Parapat and then drive to Sipirok, on the way stop to see clove, and pineapple plantation, visit traditional village at Balige, and Sipoholon hot springs, and walking at the back of Sarulla river near the nice view of terrace. Arrival at Sipirok check in to Hotel.
Day 5 : Sipirok – Bukit Tinggi
After early breakfast leave Sipirok for Bukittinggi on the way stop at Sihepeng to see the atraction of mongkey picking up the coconut and pepper, vanilla, cardamon garden. Then passing rain tropical forest of Rimba Panti and crossing equator line at Bonjol, afternoon arrival at Bukittinggi the charming town of Minangkabau check in to Hotel.
Day 6 : Bukittinggi – Minangkabau
After breakfast city tour by visiting Sianok Canyon with its Japanesse tunnel, for de kock, Museum, Big tower O’clock “Jam Gadang”, Museum and Market. Then drive to Batusangkar to via Tabek Patah on the way stop at Baso to see traditional weaving and arrival at Batu Sangkar visit the old Palace of Minangkabau Kingdom at Pagaruyung, afternoon return to Bukittinggi via Lake Singkarak.
Day 7 : Bukittinggi - Padang
After breakfast drive to Padang on the way stop at Anay valley waterfall and arrival at Padang directly transfer to Airport for your next destination. |
